Understanding bagpipe pitch and just intonation
Unlike pianos or modern orchestral instruments tuned to equal temperament at concert A440, the Great Highland Bagpipe chanter is tuned to just intonation relative to its drones. Modern pipes pitch typically between 475 Hz and 482 Hz (roughly a sharp B-flat in concert pitch).
💡 3-step tuning checklist
1. Tune your chanter first: Sound Low A into the microphone to find and stabilize your reed's sweet spot around 476 Hz to 480 Hz.2. Tune the outside tenor drone: Strike up the outside tenor and tune it against your chanter Low A until all acoustic beating disappears.
3. Tune bass and inside tenor: Bring in the bass drone against the tuned tenor, then finish with the middle tenor drone.
